After a few days relaxing and shaking off the stress of the passport dilemma it was time to say goodbye to the party and people of Daytona Beach. We were up early for the drive to Miami International Airport – one airport, nine people and our much-anticipated journey to Nicaragua was officially beginning.
We hopped off the plane in Managua and collected our bags while we looked outside towards grey skies and light rain (paradise can’t be perfect all the time I assumed.) We did our best with the taxi drivers to get across to them where we needed to go and finding out how much it would cost and soon enough we were out on the crazy roads of Managua.
Every vehicle on the road appeared to be in a race to get somewhere and it was not clear to me exactly what circumstances warranted the use of your car horn. We darted in front and between the mixture of cars, buses and bikes on the hectic roads of Nicaragua’s capital city before arriving at the bus station where we planned to continue on to Leon.
Our taxi ride gave us a taste of things to come with the driver of our mini bus to Leon speeding down the wrong side of the road as he overtook every car in his way. It was almost like he was playing a game with some of the other drivers and we held our breath as we watched gleaming headlights coming directly at us from the opposite direction. It got to a point where it was better not to watch in order to try and relax a little on the 2-hour journey and eventually (and thankfully) we arrived in Leon.
