The bus ride was pretty comfy although it stopped way too often but we made it to Managua sometime after midnight. Surprise surprise, it was now going to cost us more in the taxis then originally anticipated... who would have thought Nicaraguans would have tried to rip us off in the middle of the night!!
We paid up and packed into the 4 taxis when suddenly one of the taxis broke down and 14 of us were packed into 3 taxis. With all of our backpacks it was pretty hilarious as we tried to figure out the best arrangement of people per cab. In our cab we had Godfrey, Will, Bryce and I in the back and Troy in the front. Being that he was the smallest of us all that probably wasn't a good move but nevertheless we were on our way. Now all we cared about was making it there, the problem with traveling in the middle of the night was the position of power we were putting the drivers in and I was worried about it the whole way there. Not to mention I felt our driver would have much rather been in bed and he was slowly losing his ability to keep his eyes open!
Driving along and suddenly we hear a sound quite similar to a chopper coming down above us. Something was definitely up with the car... it may have had something to do with the speed bump that appeared out of nowhere that we hit at a good 60k's and scared the crap out of all of us. Our driver continued along, occasionally popping his head out the window to look back at the cause of the trouble while at the same time completely veering off the road.
After a few failed attempts of getting our driver to stop (apparently ALTO doesn't mean stop even though it's on their stop signs) he finally pulled over and the boys hopped out for a look. Turns out the wheel was nearly falling off (nothing major) and with a few tightening of bolts we were back on the road again.
Will: "We should probably tell him he needs to get some new wheel bearings.."
Troy: "To be honest, as long as we get there... I don't give a shit..."
We continued on our journey and caught up with our third car.. probably only because they were pulled over by the federal police! It was now past 2am and we were slightly fed up with all the obstacles, not to mention worried that we weren't going to make it at all! With no real idea what was going on, we just sat and waited as the policemen approached our different taxi drivers. I was scared that once again they'd be asking for our passports but soon enough the cab drivers returned to our cabs and we continued once more. Our cab dsriver didnt' seem overly happy, he'd probably copped a fine for not having a license or something.. who knows!!
FINALLY, we arrived in San Juan Del Sur and were fortunately checked in to hostel Casa 28 at some time after 3 in the morning. Quite the adventure, can't help but laugh about it now.
